A review of Dorset Days:

"I found it very interesting and certainly brought back childhood memories of Dorset.  Of course I can remember the Swanage steamer, being a Girl Guide, bombs being found on the beach at Studland etc etc etc so it makes a fantastic read."

"I am now down here in Swanage and the hills and sea are magnificent. My Husbands golf course is glorious, and we play there every day, in the afternoons. He is really very proud of the course, having made it the best in Dorset, since buying it some years ago...  Our farm is not very far away, so it is quite easy to go and see how that is going on too..."

Enid Blyton loved coming to Purbeck for her holidays. In fact she came three times a year for over twenty years! She enjoyed many of the things that visitors still do today, such as travelling to Corfe Castle by steam train and swimming around Swanage pier.
Like Thomas Hardy before her, the dramatic Dorset countryside was to take a hold on her and her writings. Some of her best loved adventure stories are about real places and real people she knew in Dorset, and others still were influenced by the landscape.

This little guide will help you to explore the world that Enid Blyton knew, both the Dorset landscape and family life in the mid-twentieth century.

A review of The Animals of Enid Blyton's Dorset:

"I'm just writing to say how much our daughter Hannah, aged 8, is enjoying your animal activity book (The Animals of Enid Blyton's Dorset.)  She has spent hours doing the puzzles and colouring the pictures, using the information in the book as a guide.  I think it was a great idea of yours to create a book on Dorset wildlife using extracts from Enid Blyton's Animal Book.  It's a lovely book, and great value too."

In 1927 Enid  Blyton wrote The Animal Book, the first of her natural history books for children, which is an extremely detailed book about Britain's fauna.   Ann has drawn some of the animals in a Purbeck setting, and we have taken a passage from the  Animal Book so that Enid Blyton herself is telling you how to colour the picture correctly. Viv adds a bit about the current conservation of the animals in Dorset, and has also devised some fiendish puzzles.......

"My mother, Enid Blyton, was taught by her father to observe wild life around her from the time she was very young. When she was old enough to sit quietly he took her on his fishing expeditions and he helped her to identify and sketch the creatures she saw around her.

In those days it was very important  to note down colour and patterning because books were illustrated in black and white drawings and photographs.
When Enid Blyton got home she would look up the wildlife she had seen in her fathers books, make notes on them and paint or colour a careful picture.
When she was training as a teacher, the deputy head was knowledgeable as her father, and she encouraged Enid Blyton to develop imaginative and practical ways if imparting her own knowledge of nature to the children she taught.
This was the beginning of many books that Enid Blyton wrote for children of all ages. Vivienne Endecott has used some of Enid Blyton's earliest writing in this delightful book, together with the challenging puzzles. The attractive illustrations are by Ann Gray.
Enid Blyton enjoyed many holidays in Dorset and I hope that you will enjoy learning about the Dorset Wildlife that she loved as you read this book and colour the pictures."
