Of the 700+ books that Enid Blyton wrote, not all can be regarded as literary gems, and some have stood the test of time better than others.  Here is a selection of some of my favourites as an adult reader; the exclusion of many of my childhood favourites is simply because I haven’t got around to re-reading them yet!  When reading them try to get yourself into the mindset of the age child they were written for (the ages of the fictional children will usually reflect this!)  They are listed from youngest to oldest.

Is a story about race the same as a racist story?

Does modernising Blyton improve the stories or lose their social context?

Can a mother ever get the work-home balance right?

Should a student know how to cook?

The critics of Blyton have long made known their views of her work.  Often, it must be thought, with them having read very few of the actual texts.  We shall look at a variety of books and consider them in the light of the attitudes of the time, and the questions that Blyton herself poses.

There will also be a stunning walk, a steam train trip to Corfe, and a quiz.
