“We somehow all parted company yesterday without me having an opportunity of thanking you for such a fantastic weekend. It was great to meet up with such an interesting collection of Enid Blyton fans and the whole weekend went off really well, due I am sure to the tremendous amount of preparation
and effort you put into everythin
g.

I have received a number of sympathetic glances from people when I have told them I was the joint winner of the Famous Five quiz, but I can take it!!  If you do decide to put on something similar next year (bird weekend or another
Enid Blyton weekend nearby) then do please let us know. We should certainly love to be there if we can make it.”    Philip

All Blyton fans know that you cannot make an adventure happen –they just sort of happen to you when you least expect them.  So this is not an adventure holiday but a literary holiday when we explore what life was like for the original readers of the Famous Five books, growing up during the Second World War.  We shall visit Corfe Castle, the influence for Kirrin Castle, by steam train just as Enid Blyton did.  We will explore Godlingston Heath and her golf course, gazing down at Whispering Island.  We walk along the coast path at night to the cliffs and the castle.  And there are lashings of Ginger Beer – of course!
Kirrin Castle, Mystery Moor, Whispering Island and Enid’s own golf course are all to be found as
we travel around Purbeck by steam train, horse & cart, and shanks pony!  We shall also find out what life was like for the original readers of the books, growing up in WWII.  Be prepared for the Big Quiz, but if you only read one book before you come make it Five have a Mystery to Solve.

How a wartime visit to Corfe Castle came to influence the Famous Five series.  The walk takes you around the village but not into the castle itself, which is owned by the National Trust.  There are good value combined tickets available if you travel with the Swanage Steam Railway – just like Enid Blyton did herself in 1940.

Previous participants have been delighted with the hostel, including those who have never been hostelling before.  It is a big old house and the common room is oak panelled. The warden has reserved small family rooms for our group.

"The Youth Hostel was the nicest one I have stayed in. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was just right."  Bronya. There is a choice of menu, all diets are catered for, and the group will take meals together.
There is a dedicated field studies unit, and we have the use of a classroom with a video. All adults will need to join the YHA (on arrival).

Some useful links:

Hostelling is a great way to have cheap holidays, so once you’ve been to Swanage you may like to visit others.  My favourites include Winchester which is a mill with water running under the building, and St Briavel’s in the Forest of Dean , which is a moated Norman Castle! Visit www.yha.org.uk

What did Julian and Dick (and George!) look like?  There are some interesting suggestions at histclo.hispeed.com

Durlston Country Park is just a mile from the hostel and is a great place to see birds and dolphins!  www.durlston.co.uk
